Is the Economic Situation Really Improving In North America?

By Grumpy Oltrucker

While news commentators and reporters continue to talk about improvements in the overall economy in Canada and the United States, I personally have not seen the evidence. As a matter of fact things affecting my income and security tend to indicate the exact opposite.

I have been a truck driver for a large portion of the past 38 years and I've seen good times in this industry and some times that were not so good. This current year has been one of the worst in my memory.

I drove as a company driver for the first 25 years or so before taking the leap to owning my own truck and becoming what is known as an owner/operator. Most drivers dream of owning their own truck and I was no different.

One thing I can say without hesitation is that I made more money 20 years ago as a company driver making 23 cents a mile than I am this year owning my own truck. The freight just is not there in sufficient quantity to keep all the trucks that are out here busy.

In the month of August alone I have spent more time sitting, waiting for reloads than at any other time I can remember. While it is often a little slower during summer vacation periods, this year is unprecedented. I generally average 10,000 to 13,000 miles per month with 4 to 6 days home, but I have only been home a day and a half in the past 40 days and still have not reached 10,000 miles in that time.

So where is the improvement in the economy? It seems the banks are the only ones recording record profits and that at the expense of the rest of us whose cost of living has only skyrocketed upwards.

GrumpyOlTrucker is a long-haul truck driver/owner operator, traveling US and Canada, living in Nova Scotia. I have been trucking for most of the past 38 years. To view more of my ramblings and observations from the road go to: http://GrumpyOldTrucker.com

Would have to agree with you. It's hard to believe and report about the economy improving when shipping is down. If things aren't moving then that means they are no being bought, and so no upturn in the economy.
